Napier Modern Tartan. Napier Modern is a classic blue-based tartan with white and black checks. This name was given to the court official in charge of the Royal Nappery or Linen. When Alexander Napier made his fortune in the wool trade, and financial dealings with James I, he obtained a charter to the lands of Merchiston and became Provost of Edinburgh in 1437.
