This piece was made by Luciana, daughter of the chief (or "cacique" as they are known in Brazil) of the Aldeia de Bertioga tribe, a position of leadership awarded to those with ample knowledge of the spiritual and medicinal realms within the group. The indigenous population of the Guarani M'bya ethnicity are a sub-group of the Guarani, and present in over 8 Brazilian states from north to south. Despite the pressures placed on the Guarani culture in recent political and social climates, the M'bya maintain a strong group identity, with their own traditions, music and artifacts. They are active in the fight to preserve their heritage and authentic way of life.
