Caipora Palm Leaf Straw Clutch

A handcrafted clutch made from palm leaf straw fibres. These are weaved manually, and come with a magnetic closure and full internal lining. 

Size: 48cm height x 40cm length x 24cm widthStory: The Association of Women Artisans of Itaiçaba currently has 20 active artisans. It was originally founded in 1998 to support the trade of work produced by women in the region. In the beginning, the group produced simple objects to commercialise throughout the country, such as brooms or hats. By developing unique new products with a higher technical skill requirement, they have since managed to reach new markets with their work. The raw material used is taken from the carnaúba palm tree, the eye of the palm, or the central part of the leaves. The palm leaves are sun-dried in wet rags for 4 days to keep them malleable. They are then dyed and weaved. The carnaúba palms are a key source of income for a significant number of families in the region, for whom artisanal crafts are key to their livelihood.
