Sugar Skull Retablo - Nativity With A Jesus As A Toddler

This precious little nativity comes in a box - so no wrapping the Holy Family pieces in toilet paper every year.  Retablo is plaster over wood and painted. Figures are hand molded clay and paint - Joseph & Mary, a large baby Jesus, 2 shepherds and a big lamb.  Faces are very sweet. Originally, these small retablos were made by family members with saint imagery to take with the sheep herder of the family on their long treks into the Andes. This devotional would be opened up during prayer time. 

This retablo has a large, toddler size baby Jesus in the middle and the outside has been hand painted in traditional colors & designs. These folk art retablos are now a popular tourist art from Cuzco and come in many themes; but a nativity is amongst the favorites. This nativity has leather hinges on the door and appears to be 60 years old or so.  This retablo is vintage and has that vintage "patina" but no cracks, breaks or repairs.
