Sugar Skull Hill Tribe Ceremonial Headdress

The Akha indigenous group are located in the highlands of Thailand, Vietnam, Burma, Laos and China's Yunann Province.

Akha headdresses are a highly characteristic element of Akha women's traditional attire and hold significant cultural and spiritual value.  They can also indicate the wearer's age, marital status, and social standing within the community.

Each headdress is uniquely decorated by its owner, making them individual works of art.  While there are characteristics common to all women of a village, the specific arrangement of beads, coins, silver buttons, tin designs and other adornments reflects the wearer's personal style.

Traditionally, Akha women wore these headdresses daily. Today, they are more commonly worn for special occasions, ceremonies and cultural events serving as a vibrant expression of Akha heritage and identity.

I helped my friend in Mexico City (he is a museographer or museum curator) mount an exhibit of "traditional sombreros" from around the world and we spent the weekend making 15 styrofoam wig heads into hat displays. You first need to make a heavy wooden block drilled for a dowel to extend out and up from the center. Then slice the wig head into a portion that will hide up inside the hat. Press the styrofoam onto the dowel and cover with the hat. Voilá. This type of hat stand shows off the artistic detailing on all sides.
