Mythical Beasts is inspired by rare and highly decorative patterns from both Thomas Rose Coalport and Miles Mason. By bringing together these unusual designs and adding in an eastern-inspired, surreal background, Richard has re-imagined Coalport's mythical creatures in a particularly striking way. 

At first glance these beastly dragons look somewhat menacing but upon closer inspection it becomes clear they are really rather friendly. Indeed, in East Asian symbolism, dragons are thought to bring good fortune, something which may not have been appreciated by 19th Century porcelain designers.
