Main Features & Information
These jumbo prunes are the largest dried plums. Naturally sweet and fat free, our delicious jumbo plums are high in potassium and fiber. They are the perfect healthy treat for snacking. Once called prunes, the industry thought switching over to dried plums was a much better approach. We still call these prunes though!
These jumbo plums contain the pit. If you are looking for prunes without the pit, we also carry pitted prunes.
Health Benefits of Jumbo Prunes
1) Antioxidant Powerhouse - Jumbo prunes are an excellent source of antioxidants, the protective compounds which neutralize the effects of damaging free radicals. According to a Tufts University study, dried plums contain even more antioxidants than fresh plums, blueberries, and raisins. Antioxidants are associated with reducing the risk for chronic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and age-related degenerative diseases.
2) Digestive Remedy - Jumbo plums are packed with insoluble fiber, which adds bulk to the diet and keeps the digestive system running smoothly. Prunes are a well-known treatment for constipation and its not just the fiber content that helps. The sorbitol present in dried plums acts as a natural laxative that softens the stool and improves bowel irregularity.
3) High in Fiber - The insoluble fiber comes from the skin of the dried plum, and the fruit pulp is chock-full of soluble fiber. Both insoluble and soluble fiber are essential for health. Insoluble fiber is a hero when it comes to the digestive system, and soluble fiber offers a host of other health benefits.
By slowing the breakdown of carbohydrates and the uptake of sugar, soluble fiber helps regulate blood sugar. It also reduces the absorption of cholesterol and has been associated with lowering LDL “bad” cholesterol levels. Fiber is also an appetite-suppressant that keeps you feeling full longer to prevent overeating later in the day.
4) Support Bone Health - Eating dried plums may be an effective preventative measure against osteoporosis, a condition in which the bones become weak and fragile. Research from Florida State University showed that women who ate 100 grams of dried plums per day for three months experienced improved bone formation markers. The bone-building mineral boron is found in high quantities in dried plums and may be the reason for these improvements. Prunes are also a good source of potassium, which improves bone strength and offers heart-healthy benefits.
