Modern MacLean Hunting Medium Weight Tartan is a green-based tartan with black and white checks.

This clan held extensive lands in the Western Isles and mainland of the Highlands. They claim descent from Gillean of the Battle Axe, who lived during the reign of King Alexander III. The MacLeans followed the MacDonalds, Lords of the Isles, and fought at the Battle of Harlaw in 1411. They became powerful, but declined in influence in the 16th century.
