MacDonald of Ardnamurchan Modern tartan. MacDonald or Ardnamurchan Modern is an red-based tartan with black and yellow overchecks. The founder of this Clan was "John the Bold", who was the third son of Angus More of Islay. John was sent to clear the Norwegian settlers from Ardnamurchan in 1270. John's descendants held these territories for as much as 340 years and during this time exerted considerable influence in the Western Isles.
