Ikon Ikon Dean Kelland: Notes From Grendon - Two

Notes from Grendon: Two is published in the final year of British artist Dean Kelland’s residency at HMP Grendon, a Category B prison in Buckinghamshire.

The arrangement of this book mirrors Notes from Grendon (2022) in its three parts. The first section includes excerpts from Dean Kelland’s diaries and sketchbooks.

The middle section includes an essay by Dr Henry Ward who reflects on the development of the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Studio at HMP Grendon. This space is of great interest to Ward as a teacher and artist with a long-standing interest in the value of creative practice in education settings.

The final section is an interview between Nick London (pseudonym – a community member on D Wing) and Kelland, revealing two crucial devices for Kelland during his residency: masking and mirroring.
