Poplars of the Epte 1891 Oil paint on canvas 924 × 737 mm Tate. Presented by the Art Fund 1926

After learning that these poplar trees lining the river Epte were to be felled, Monet bought the trees at auction in order to continue painting them. Part of a series of paintings completed in 1891, his impressionist style captures the trees’ leaves with strong directional brushstrokes.
