Kala imagery appears on architecture throughout Southeast Asia, usually in the form of a bodiless head with an open mouth and curving fangs. A ferocious but protective being, this Kala Makara head is based on a sculpture that was once part of a lintel installed over a doorway in a palace in Yogyakarta.Kala is the giant symbolising time, by making kala’s head above doorways and portals element, it symbolises that time consumes everything. Kala heads are also a protective figure, with a fierce giant face that scares away malevolent spirits.Above the painting, the text reads "Sekala," while below it reads "Niskala."

Sekala (the seen) / Niskala (the unseen) is a concept rooted in Balinese philosophy. Bali, popularly known as the Island of the Gods, is imbued with deep-rooted spirituality that influences every aspect of life.
