GAJAH WAKTRA BLUE ECOVERO RAYON SHORT SLEEVE SHIRT LIMITED EDITION of 100

Intricately crafted with pen and ink, adorned with natural pigments on paper, these diptych artworks transport us into the heart of Balinese mythology. In the right scene, we confront the visage of Prince Sutasoma seemingly swallowed by a giant head. In the left panel, we find a giant with an elephant’s head, a serpent, and a tigress.

FURTHER READING

The tale of Buddhist prince Sutasoma is an Old Javanese poem from the 14th century, set during the Majapahit empire. Sutasoma, deeply pious, fled the palace to avoid marriage and kingship, seeking refuge in a forest monastery.

There, he learned of King Purusada, a demon who craved human flesh after tasting it by accident. Purusada swore to offer 100 kings to the god Kala to cure his wounded leg. The monks asked Sutasoma to kill the demon king, but he refused violence.

On his journey, Sutasoma met Gaja Waktra, a giant with an elephant’s head. The giant challenged him, but Sutasoma, through meditation and peace, defeated him and gained a disciple. Next, they encountered a serpent and a starving tigress. Sutasoma offered himself to the tigress to save her cubs, but the god Indra resurrected him, turning the tigress into another disciple.

A war erupted between Dasabahu and Purusada, who had captured 100 kings for Kala. Purusada attacked and captured Sutasoma to offer him to Kala. The final scene shows Sutasoma voluntarily offering himself to Kala. Kala cannot swallow or regurgitate him, stuck until he renounces his aggression.
