PAYING HOMAGE TO #44 – HAMMERIN' HANK AARON
History: The man who would become known as “Hammerin’ Hank” had a tryout with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949 as a 15-year-old. The Dodgers passed, but after Aaron joined the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League, the scouts took notice. He was offered contracts by both the New York Giants and the Boston Braves. As the Braves offered $50 more per month, Hank signed with Boston, who assigned him to their Eau Claire, Wisconsin farm club. He was called up to the Braves – now in Milwaukee – in 1954. Hank famously broke Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record on April 8, 1974, when he hit #715 off a pitch by Al Downing (who coincidentally also wore #44).
