Main Features & Information
A hand-painted screen print made using natural pigments from the genipap fruit. Made by an indigenous artisan, these make for beautiful decorations or placemats.Size: 25cm x 45cmStory: Emi Kayapó and her partner Pá Kayapó divide their time between the small town of Refenção and the indigenous settlement of Gorotire, the biggest of such settlements for the Kayapó peoples in the region. The couple is chasing after their dream: a university degree qualification in nursing and pharmacology, respectively. Faced with the lack of any public universities in their region, they devote themselves to their craft as a means to providing for their 4 children, whilst funding their studies on the side. Their craft is therefore key to their livelihoods, and to helping them reach their dreams. According to Emi, it is an incredible challenge for an indigenous woman to get access to tertiary education, but one she is willing to take on as a means to improving their quality of life. It is also a way to participate in broader society, outside of their indigenous roots. She hopes that through her craft, she can keep her traditions and culture alive. It is Emi who paints the screens, using the natural pigment from the genipap fruit (jenipapo). The shapes used are inspired by the elements tattooed onto the skin of the Kayapó peoples.
