Caipora Ex-Voto Heart Offering Wooden Sculpture

A handcrafted wooden sculpture of a heart, or a heart in a palm. 

Size: 22cm height x 5cm length (heart) / 26cm height x 8cm length (heart in a palm)Story: Juazeiro do Norte is the most important hub for pilgrimages in the northeast of Brazil, with devout believers walking hundreds of kilometres to seek the blessing of Father Cícero. The term "ex-voto" is given to objects gifted to the deities to thank them for granting ones wishes. It's a blend of art and religion which has given popular art an important significance in the eye of art historians studying the culture, archeology and anthropology of nations. In Brazil, this tradition dates back to the 18th century. It is usual for the artisans who make ex-votos to remain anonymous, however, the beauty of these pieces has recently awakened a curiosity amongst art collectors, who increasingly seek authentic pieces of popular art. This particular sculpture has been made by Vanderley Silva, one such artist based in Ceará.
