Bellápierre Echoes Of Reims: Pom-Pom Shell No. 2

French 37mm WWI Artillery Shell with Reims Cathedral Motif

This antique French 37mm artillery shell, dated 1918, features an exquisite embossed depiction of Reims Cathedral framed by a laurel wreath — a symbol of peace and triumph. Though not decorated in the trenches, this piece is an authentic World War I shell that beautifully blends historical military context with fine artistic detail.

These smaller-caliber 37mm shells earned the nickname “pom-pom shells” from the rapid, repetitive firing sound of the 37mm Hotchkiss revolving cannon — pom-pom-pom — widely used by Allied forces during WWI. The cannon’s fast, rhythmic blasts made it a signature sound on the battlefield.

While this shell was not hand-engraved in the trenches, its raised, pressed artwork was likely produced soon after the war’s end as a commemorative piece. It was found in Normandy, France — a region rich in both military and artistic legacy.

Note: This is one of a matching pair being sold separately. You can find the companion shell under “Pom-Pom Shell No. 1: Reims in Relief.”

Due to the handmade nature of these pieces and variations in age and patina, no two are ever identical. Similarities in design do not indicate reproduction.
